The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has congratulated H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan on her victory in the presidential election in Tanzania, noting the conclusion of the electoral process and commending the people of Tanzania for their participation.
In a statement from the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Chairperson expressed deep regret over the loss of lives during post-election protests, extending condolences to the families of the victims. He emphasized the importance of upholding fundamental rights and freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly and expression, while urging authorities to protect these rights within the bounds of the law.
He further called on citizens to exercise their rights responsibly and peacefully, highlighting the need for unity and stability during the post-election period.
The Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s principles as enshrined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance — particularly the respect for rule of law, human rights, fundamental freedoms, and political pluralism, which serve as the bedrock of democratic and stable societies.
The African Union reiterated its commitment to stand with the people and Government of Tanzania in their continued efforts to preserve peace, national cohesion, and democracy.
