Human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, has raised serious allegations against the Tinubu-led administration, claiming that a secret decision has already been made regarding the fate of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a strongly worded statement, Sowore asserted that a “high-level political conspiracy” has been devised to either sentence Kanu to death or life imprisonment, alleging that the outcome has been predetermined and merely disguised under the guise of judicial proceedings.

According to him, the current trial before Justice Omotosho is being manipulated to produce a foregone conclusion. He claimed the judge is expected to interpret Kanu’s refusal to open his defence as an admission of guilt, thus paving the way for a ruling that aligns with the government’s hidden agenda.

“The plan is to declare that his refusal to open his defence amounts to an admission of guilt — a convenient interpretation designed to seal a verdict already agreed upon behind closed doors,” Sowore stated.

He drew a historical parallel between the present situation and the events of November 1995, when the regime of General Sani Abacha executed environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders after a military tribunal found them guilty in what many regarded as a politically motivated trial.

“Today, three decades later, Nigeria appears to be standing at the same moral crossroads. Only the year has changed — this is 2025, not 1995 — but the machinery of repression grinds on,” Sowore remarked, warning that Kanu’s case has transcended questions of legality and now represents a test of the nation’s collective conscience.

He urged Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant, emphasizing that the trial’s outcome could define the country’s commitment to justice, democracy, and human rights in the years ahead.
