Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a controversial Nigerian Islamic cleric known for his engagements with armed groups, has publicly criticised military airstrikes and bombings, arguing that resources spent on such operations could be better used to address the root causes of insecurity. In his reaction to a reported US‑led bombing of terrorist camps in Sokoto State, Gumi challenged the use of expensive munitions, suggesting that the funds could instead be invested in schools and basic amenities for herders and rural communities as part of a broader strategy to tackle ignorance and marginalisation — factors he believes contribute to recruitment into violent groups.

Gumi’s remarks came amid footage circulating online of a missile component found in a field, which he referenced while emphasising the need for education and development rather than bombardment. He stated that many herders lack understanding of the dangers of unexploded ordnance and highlighted that investment in community infrastructure, including schools, could help reduce violence and foster peace.

His comment reflects a longstanding position he has taken over the years — that kinetic military actions alone cannot resolve insecurity in Nigeria without addressing socio‑economic deficits and providing alternatives to violence for disenfranchised young people. Gumi has previously advocated for education, dialogue and amnesty‑style rehabilitation as components of lasting peace strategies.

While Sheikh Gumi’s critiques are widely reported and discussed in Nigerian media, his views are controversial and have drawn both support and criticism from different segments of society. Some observers argue that focusing on education and development is essential, while others contend that military action remains necessary to counter violent groups. The comment about the cost of bombs versus building schools is part of this broader debate.
