In the late hours of Saturday night into early Sunday, 11 January 2026, a coordinated operation by Nigerian and Nigerien security forces thwarted a potentially deadly bandit attack on Abara village in Sabon-Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to local and security sources, about six bandits on motorcycles attempted to assault the village but were unaware that Nigerian troops had received actionable intelligence prior to the raid. As the bandits abandoned their motorcycles and approached the village on foot, soldiers immediately mobilized to repel the attack. Local vigilantes from Abara and nearby Kyalkyale communities joined the operation, creating a combined defensive force that engaged the assailants from multiple directions.
The bandits, under heavy fire, were forced to retreat into surrounding farmlands. In an attempt to escape via their parked motorcycles, they unexpectedly ran into a Nigerien military patrol that had strategically secured the area. The patrol opened fire, killing all of the assailants on the spot.
By morning, security operatives captured a suspected surviving bandit in Magajin Dawaki village, Sabon-Birni LGA. Witnesses reported that the suspect attempted to disguise himself in the home of a villager, removing his combat attire for traditional clothing to avoid detection. He reportedly offered his phone to the homeowner and pleaded not to be handed over to vigilantes before being arrested and turned over to the authorities.
This joint Nigeria–Niger operation highlights the effectiveness of cross-border intelligence-sharing and coordinated security responses in curbing violent attacks on civilians. Local leaders praised the swift action, noting that the intervention prevented significant loss of life and property.
