The Nigerian military, under the joint multi-agency security initiative known as Operation Whirl Stroke, has reported tactical success in its ongoing efforts to combat banditry, kidnappings and criminal insurgent activities across Benue State and adjacent areas in the North-Central region. The operation, which is part of a wider security strategy targeting violent non-state actors, has recorded multiple operational outcomes tied to credible local intelligence and coordinated ground patrols.

In one of the recent engagements, troops of Sector 1 conducted a combined confidence-building and fighting patrol along the Katsina-Ala–Zaki Biam Road, a corridor that has previously seen kidnappings, ambushes and other violent acts attributed to loosely organised bandit elements. Acting on credible civilian intelligence, Nigerian Army and allied security personnel confronted suspected bandits in bush terrain, leading to an encounter in which at least two suspected combatants were neutralised. Troops cleared the area and recovered a number of items abandoned by fleeing suspects, including a military-style rifle and ammunition, as well as camouflage material.

Senior commanders in the joint task force publicly commended the operational troops for their professionalism and responsiveness to community-provided information. Military leadership emphasised that local collaboration remains essential to the mission’s success, particularly in environments characterised by dense vegetation and complex terrain that often shelter criminal cells. Authorities called on residents to sustain cooperation with security agencies and reiterated the armed forces’ commitment to protecting lives and property.

Operation Whirl Stroke is a Defence Headquarters-led joint task force primarily addressing insecurity in the North-Central region, including Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa states. It operates alongside other regional security initiatives such as Operation Hadin Kai in the Northeast and Operation Hadarin Daji in the Northwest.

In recent months, the task force has been active not only in kinetic engagements but also in counter-kidnapping missions. For example, troops under the same operation successfully rescued passengers from a kidnap attempt along the Enugu-Otukpo Road, preventing an escalation into a worst-case hostage situation.

Such engagements occur within a broader pattern of intensified military pressure against criminal networks. According to military statements published by Nigerian news outlets, February 2026 saw continued pressure on terrorists and criminal syndicates nationwide, including arrests and recoveries of arms and ammunition in multi-theatre operations.

Benue State and its transit corridors remain sensitive due to a combination of historical and contemporary security pressures. Areas around Katsina-Ala, Zaki Biam, Ukum and Logo Local Government Areas have often been cited as hotspots for kidnappings, bandit attacks and ambushes, with security forces repeatedly conducting clearance operations to disrupt hostile elements and recover abducted civilians. Past operations have led to rescues of kidnapped victims and the apprehension of suspects linked to criminal groups operating within the region.

Military officials maintain that sustained pressure on criminal networks, combined with timely community intelligence, is vital to reducing the operational space available to armed groups. The synergy between local residents, traditional leaders and security forces is frequently cited as a key factor in disrupting planned attacks and rescuing hostages.

Authorities reaffirm that Operation Whirl Stroke and allied security frameworks will continue to prioritise intelligence-led operations, community engagement and rapid response patrols aimed at denying bandit and terrorist elements freedom of action. While immediate tactical outcomes such as neutralisation of suspects and recovery of weapons demonstrate incremental gains, security officials emphasise that long-term stability will require persistent collaboration between civilians and security agents.

Further updates on operational developments are expected as the task force consolidates gains and adapts its strategies to evolving security dynamics in Benue and neighbouring states.
