Operatives of the Department of State Services have arrested several suspects allegedly involved in an arms trafficking network operating across multiple states in north-eastern Nigeria following weeks of covert surveillance.

Security sources disclosed that the suspects were intercepted while travelling in a grey Toyota Corolla bearing registration number Taraba JAL 475 YQ. During the arrest operation, intelligence officers recovered a significant cache of military-grade weaponry from the vehicle, including two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), an RPG launcher, and several rounds of live ammunition.

Preliminary security findings indicate that the suspects were part of an organised arms distribution network believed to be supplying weapons across parts of Bauchi State, Gombe State, Taraba State, and Adamawa State. Investigators said the operation targeted what authorities described as a cross-border trafficking route that facilitates the movement of illegal arms within the region.

Intelligence officials revealed that the suspects were placed under surveillance for approximately three weeks before the enforcement action was executed. The covert monitoring phase reportedly involved tracking communication patterns, travel movements, and suspected contact points associated with the alleged trafficking ring.

According to security sources, the ammunition recovered during the arrest was allegedly intended for delivery to an individual identified as Ardo Hamma Ari, who is reportedly resident in Alkaleri Local Government Area. Authorities have not yet confirmed the legal status or operational role of the named individual, and investigators are continuing efforts to verify his possible connection to the trafficking network.

The DSS stated that the operation forms part of broader national efforts to disrupt illicit arms circulation linked to violent criminal activity, including banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency operations affecting parts of northern Nigeria. Security analysts have repeatedly warned that the availability of military-grade weapons in criminal markets contributes significantly to escalating violence in vulnerable communities.

Officials involved in the investigation said forensic examination of the seized weapons is underway to determine their origin, possible previous usage, and distribution channels. Ballistic and serial number tracing procedures are expected to assist authorities in identifying whether the arms were smuggled across international borders or diverted from existing stockpiles.

The suspects are currently in DSS custody for detailed interrogation. Intelligence officers are attempting to establish whether the arrested individuals were operating as independent traffickers, members of a larger criminal syndicate, or intermediaries facilitating arms movement between multiple buyers.

Security sources indicated that investigators are also analysing communication devices recovered during the operation. Digital forensic specialists are expected to examine call records, encrypted messaging applications, and stored contact lists to map the network structure of the alleged trafficking organisation.

The arrest has been described by security officials as strategically significant because arms trafficking routes in the north-east region are often associated with violent insurgent and criminal groups operating across porous borders. Authorities believe that disrupting supply chains is essential to weakening operational capabilities of such networks.

Community security advocates have welcomed the operation, arguing that sustained intelligence-driven enforcement is necessary to curb the circulation of illegal firearms. Civil society organisations have urged security agencies to expand surveillance coverage across transport corridors that are frequently used by traffickers.

The DSS reiterated its commitment to counter-espionage, internal security protection, and disruption of organised criminal activities within Nigeria. Officials stressed that the agency will continue to employ intelligence-led policing strategies to identify and dismantle arms distribution networks.

Law enforcement authorities have not yet disclosed the names of all individuals arrested in connection with the operation. Formal charges are expected to be filed after the completion of interrogation procedures and evidence compilation.

Stone Reporters note that the arrest reflects increasing security pressure on arms trafficking syndicates operating in the north-east geopolitical zone. Analysts argue that sustained multi-agency cooperation will be necessary to address the complex supply and demand dynamics driving illegal weapon circulation.

Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses and authorities provide additional information regarding the scope of the trafficking network and possible international connections.
