Benin City, Edo State — The Edo State Police Command has initiated a large-scale security operation ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, deploying 5,000 personnel alongside specialised explosive ordnance teams to ensure safety and maintain order across the state during the festive period.

The deployment forms part of broader nationwide efforts by security agencies to tighten surveillance and prevent disruptions as Muslim faithful mark the end of Ramadan. In Edo State, officers have been strategically positioned across Eid prayer grounds, major highways, motor parks, markets and other high-traffic public areas expected to witness significant gatherings.

Police authorities say the objective is to strengthen visibility policing, deter criminal activity and ensure swift response to emergencies. The operation reflects a proactive security approach, recognising that large religious celebrations often come with increased movement of people and heightened security risks.

In addition to conventional policing, the Command has activated Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams, which are currently conducting thorough sweeps of prayer grounds and other sensitive locations. These teams are tasked with identifying and neutralising any potential explosive threats, with checks scheduled to continue throughout the celebration period.

The Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, has directed sustained patrols and intelligence-driven operations across the state, particularly focusing on entry and exit routes. Authorities consider these areas critical for monitoring movements and preventing the infiltration of criminal elements during the festive period. Security measures include surveillance, stop-and-search operations where necessary, and coordination with other agencies to strengthen coverage.

Residents have been advised to go about their normal activities without fear while remaining vigilant. The police emphasised the importance of public cooperation, urging citizens to report suspicious movements, unattended objects or unusual behaviour promptly. According to the Command, community participation is essential in maintaining a safe environment during large public events.

Security analysts note that such extensive deployments have become increasingly necessary during major celebrations in Nigeria, as authorities seek to balance public festivities with evolving security challenges. The integration of intelligence gathering, visible patrols and specialised units is viewed as a critical strategy in mitigating risks and ensuring public confidence.

Community leaders in Edo State have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will help ensure peaceful celebrations. Some stakeholders, however, have stressed the need for sustained security presence beyond festive periods, noting that long-term safety depends on consistent enforcement and engagement between law enforcement and the public.

The Edo State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property before, during and after the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. Officials have assured residents that all necessary measures are in place to respond effectively to any incidents, while also extending goodwill to Muslim faithful as they prepare to celebrate.

As the festive period approaches, the deployment underscores the importance of preparedness, coordination and vigilance in maintaining peace and stability across Edo State.
