Enugu, Nigeria — Police in Enugu State have taken into custody a 24‑year‑old man, Desmond Ugwu, following the reported assault of a pregnant woman in the Affa community of Udi Local Government Area. The suspect faces charges of attempted murder and rape after a violent attack that has alarmed residents and drawn widespread calls for justice.

Authorities reported that the incident occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, as a 30‑year‑old woman was returning home from a neighbour’s house along a dimly lit track road in Amokwo‑Affa. The route, typically considered safe during the day, became the scene of the attack when the suspect ambushed her from behind while wielding a cutlass.

According to police, the attacker forced the woman to the ground, gripped her neck in an apparent attempt to strangle her, and covered her mouth to prevent her cries from being heard. He reportedly dragged her into a nearby unfinished building, threatened to kill her if she resisted, and then allegedly raped her.

Despite the severity of the assault, the victim survived and reported the incident to the Affa Police Division early the following morning. Police operatives acted swiftly, locating and arresting Desmond Ugwu shortly thereafter. The victim was taken to a hospital for medical care and treatment for both physical injuries and psychological trauma.

Investigators recovered key evidence from the scene, including the cutlass used in the attack and items of clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains. The police confirmed that the suspect has confessed to the assault, and the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, stated that the case is under thorough investigation.

Authorities assured the public that the suspect will be arraigned in court once formal charges are filed. They also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity to help prevent similar attacks.

Community leaders and residents expressed shock and concern over the incident, calling for increased security measures, including patrols and strengthened community policing, to protect vulnerable residents. Human rights groups emphasized the need for swift judicial action and support for survivors of sexual violence, particularly in rural areas where access to justice can be limited.

The attack has reignited discussions about safety in rural and semi-rural communities of Enugu State, highlighting vulnerabilities due to poor lighting and minimal security presence. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and preventing further occurrences of such violent crimes.
