Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has celebrated a historic milestone with the successful maiden flight at Gusau International Airport. The test flight, operated by the Federal Government of Nigeria using a Bombardier Challenger 605 aircraft registered 5N-FGZ, landed at the airport at exactly 4:30pm on Sunday. The operation was part of preparations to assess the airport’s readiness for VIP movements scheduled for the coming week.
The flight was conducted under Visual Flight Rules, strictly during daylight hours, and in full compliance with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations. Prior to the landing, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority granted a one-off “No Technical Objection,” allowing the aircraft to land at the airport.
Governor Lawal, present to witness the historic landing, described the event as a landmark moment for Zamfara State, which has operated without an airport since its creation over 30 years ago. He stated that the successful test flight significantly enhances his administration’s reputation and marks a new chapter in the state’s infrastructure development.
The Gusau International Airport project includes a runway, terminal building, and control tower, and is aimed at improving connectivity, facilitating government and VIP travel, and attracting investment. The governor emphasized that the successful landing demonstrates the airport’s operational capability and sets the stage for future commercial and official flights.
Officials noted that the maiden flight was crucial for confirming the facility’s capacity to handle official flights and ensuring that all regulatory and safety requirements were met before additional operations commence. The development is expected to boost sectors such as trade, tourism, and logistics, and reflects the state government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and expanding economic opportunities.
Preparations continue for upcoming VIP visits and eventual commercial operations. The successful test flight has generated optimism that Gusau International Airport will become a key driver of growth and connectivity for Zamfara State.
