JIGAWA, Nigeria — A suspected thief has been arrested in Hadejia, Jigawa State, after allegedly targeting worshippers’ shoes during prayers inside a mosque, an act residents say may have been part of a repeated pattern of thefts over an extended period.

The suspect was reportedly apprehended on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at a mosque along Maje Road in Hadejia after being caught in the act by worshippers. Eyewitnesses said the arrest brought an end to what had become a growing concern among members of the local Muslim community, who had reportedly experienced repeated loss of footwear during prayer sessions.

According to a witness identified as Muhammed Sani Yusuf, the suspect had allegedly been operating around several mosques in the area, taking advantage of worshippers who leave their shoes outside while performing prayers. Community members believe the suspect may have been responsible for similar incidents in different locations, although the total number of stolen items has not been confirmed.

Residents said suspicion had been building over time due to recurring cases of missing footwear at various mosques, prompting some worshippers to become more vigilant during prayer gatherings. The latest incident reportedly occurred when the suspect attempted to carry out another theft but was noticed and apprehended by those present at the mosque.

Following his arrest, the suspect was handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation. Security sources say inquiries are ongoing to determine whether he acted alone or was connected to a wider pattern of theft targeting places of worship across the area.

Community members in Hadejia have expressed relief over the arrest, describing it as a welcome development that could help restore a sense of security during religious activities. Some worshippers noted that repeated thefts had caused inconvenience and discomfort, as individuals were often forced to leave prayers without their footwear or purchase replacements frequently.

Religious leaders in the area have also urged worshippers to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures when attending prayers, including better monitoring of mosque entrances where shoes are usually left unattended. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a secure environment for worship, especially during peak prayer times when mosques are crowded.

Local authorities are expected to continue investigating the case, with police authorities likely to review whether the suspect has been involved in similar incidents across other parts of Jigawa State. Officers say efforts will be made to recover any stolen items and prevent further occurrences of such petty crimes in places of worship.

The incident has sparked conversation among residents about increasing petty theft in public spaces, particularly in busy communal areas where personal belongings are often left unattended. Community leaders have called for enhanced vigilance and stronger collaboration with security personnel to address such incidents promptly.

Authorities have assured residents that the suspect will be properly investigated and prosecuted if found culpable, as part of ongoing efforts to deter criminal activity and maintain peace within the community.
