A serving mobile police officer has reportedly been arrested in connection with an armed robbery incident in Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State that led to the death of a fuel attendant during a violent attack at a filling station.

The officer, identified as Jido Ahmed, was attached to the 61 Police Mobile Force in Kontagora but was reportedly on special duty in the Agwara area of the state at the time of the incident. He was arrested following a police response to a distress call over the robbery attack.

According to security sources, the incident occurred at about 2:40 p.m. on Wednesday at a filling station located in Garun Mallam, behind BCG Garage in Kontagora. Two armed suspects allegedly arrived on a motorcycle, with one of them reportedly dressed in a mobile police uniform.

The suspects were said to have demanded money from a fuel attendant after purchasing fuel. When the attendant, identified as a 20-year-old man from Garun Mallam, reportedly resisted the demand, one of the attackers allegedly shot him in the chest before fleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

The victim was rushed to the General Hospital in Kontagora, where medical personnel confirmed him dead. His body was later released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

Following the attack, police patrol teams from the “A” Division in Kontagora, led by the Divisional Police Officer, launched a pursuit of the suspects. The operation reportedly led them to the Dadinkowa area behind a local vigilante office, where the suspects were confronted.

A gun duel reportedly ensued during the chase, resulting in one of the suspects being overpowered, shot in the leg, disarmed, and taken into custody. The arrested suspect was initially treated at the General Hospital in Kontagora before being transferred to the Police Clinic in Minna for further medical attention.

Security sources also confirmed that an AK-47 rifle with a visible serial number and 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition were recovered from the suspects during the operation.

Efforts are currently ongoing to apprehend the second suspect who reportedly escaped during the confrontation. Investigations have been launched to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged involvement of the arrested police officer.

The development has raised concerns over internal discipline and accountability within security agencies, particularly given the allegation that a serving officer may have participated in a violent criminal act while in uniform.

When contacted, the spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command declined to provide full details, stating that he would respond after obtaining further information on the case.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the outcome of the inquiry.
