The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 42-year-old man identified as Alfa Funmilayo Fatai over allegations of sexual assault involving an 8-year-old girl in the Kara area of Ibafo, along the Lagos–Ibadan corridor in Ogun State.
According to police and community sources, the suspect was apprehended after residents reportedly discovered him inside an uncompleted building where the alleged incident occurred. The minor, whose identity has been withheld due to her age and the nature of the case, was immediately rescued from the scene.
Security sources said the arrest followed a distress response after members of the community raised an alarm upon suspecting unusual activity in the area. The suspect was taken into custody by officers of the Ogun State Police Command shortly after the incident was reported.
The police confirmed that the suspect has made statements during preliminary interrogation, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The victim was taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu for medical examination and treatment, where she is currently receiving care. Authorities say the medical evaluation forms part of the evidence-gathering process in the ongoing investigation.
According to the police spokesperson, detectives from the command have taken over the case and it has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation.
He stated that the command’s gender unit is handling the matter, with prosecution expected to follow once investigations are concluded.
Community members in the Kara area expressed shock over the incident, describing it as deeply disturbing and calling for stricter monitoring of isolated and abandoned structures that often serve as hiding places for criminal activity.
The police have assured the public that the case will be thoroughly investigated and that justice will be pursued in accordance with the law. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, particularly children, from abuse and exploitation.
The incident adds to growing concerns over cases of sexual violence involving minors in different parts of the country, prompting renewed calls for stronger enforcement, public awareness, and community vigilance.
For now, the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, while the victim receives medical and psychological support under the supervision of health and child protection authorities.
