A disturbing case of alleged abuse involving a self-proclaimed pastor in Nasarawa State has triggered outrage and renewed scrutiny of unregulated religious practices, after police arrested a 37-year-old cleric accused of exploiting a teenage girl under the guise of spiritual intervention.

The suspect, identified as Asonye Isaiah, was taken into custody by operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command following a complaint filed on April 18, 2026, at the Karshi Divisional Police Headquarters. Authorities say the arrest followed a series of events that began with claims of spiritual affliction and ended in what investigators describe as a calculated act of manipulation and sexual violation.

According to police accounts, the case originated when the victim’s family, particularly her aunt, sought spiritual assistance for the 16-year-old girl after being led to believe she was experiencing unusual behavior attributed to spiritual causes. The suspect, who operates a ministry known locally as the Rock of Love and Adoration Ground in Old Karshi, allegedly convinced the family that the teenager was under demonic influence and required urgent cleansing.

Investigators say Isaiah presented himself as capable of resolving the issue through a ritual process, claiming that the girl needed to be taken to a river for purification. Trusting his authority and spiritual claims, the family reportedly allowed him to take custody of the minor for the supposed exercise.

However, instead of conducting any form of religious ritual, police allege that the suspect diverted from the agreed plan and transported the girl to a hotel in New Karshi. It was there, authorities say, that he carried out the abuse on two separate occasions.

The police further revealed that the suspect allegedly used intimidation to silence the victim, warning her against disclosing what had occurred. The threat, according to investigators, created fear and delayed immediate reporting of the incident.

The situation came to light only after the victim’s guardian observed noticeable changes in her behavior. Described as withdrawn, distressed, and unusually quiet, the teenager’s demeanor raised concern within the household. Persistent questioning eventually led to a disclosure, prompting swift action from the family.

The girl was taken for medical evaluation, and findings reportedly confirmed evidence consistent with sexual activity, reinforcing her account and forming a critical part of the case file. The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to Isaiah’s arrest later that same day.

During interrogation, police sources indicate that the suspect made statements acknowledging involvement in the incident, while also appealing for leniency. Authorities have not publicly released full details of his statement, but confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that all procedural steps are being followed.

The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has since ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia. The move, officials say, is intended to ensure a comprehensive and professional handling of the matter, given its sensitivity and gravity.

In his response, the police commissioner condemned the alleged actions, describing them as a serious breach of trust and a violation of both legal and moral standards. He emphasized that individuals who exploit positions of authority, particularly in religious settings, would face the full weight of the law.

He also issued a public advisory urging families to exercise caution when dealing with individuals who claim to possess supernatural powers or offer spiritual solutions that involve isolating vulnerable persons, especially minors. According to him, such situations can create opportunities for abuse if not properly monitored.

The case has sparked wider concern among residents of Karshi and surrounding communities, many of whom expressed shock that such an incident could occur under the cover of religious practice. Some community members have called for stricter oversight of informal worship centers and self-styled clerics operating without accountability.

Observers note that Nigeria’s deeply rooted religious culture often places significant trust in spiritual leaders, making it easier for individuals posing as clerics to gain influence over families seeking solutions to personal or unexplained challenges. This dynamic, experts say, underscores the need for greater awareness and education.

Child protection advocates have also reacted strongly, stressing the importance of safeguarding minors from exploitation in all settings, including religious environments. They argue that cases like this highlight the vulnerability of young people when authority figures misuse trust.

Legal practitioners familiar with similar cases note that the allegations, if proven in court, fall under serious criminal offenses involving minors. They emphasize that Nigerian law provides strict penalties for such acts, particularly when coercion, deception, or abuse of authority is involved.

Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed that the victim is receiving appropriate care and support, though details have been withheld to protect her identity and well-being. Officials say safeguarding her privacy remains a priority throughout the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.

As the case continues to unfold, it has reignited discussions about the balance between religious freedom and the need for regulatory frameworks to prevent abuse. While the constitution guarantees the right to practice religion, experts argue that there must also be mechanisms to protect individuals from exploitation disguised as spiritual guidance.

Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to pursuing justice in the matter, assuring the public that no individual would be exempt from accountability based on status or influence. They have also encouraged citizens to report suspicious activities promptly, emphasizing that early intervention can prevent further harm.

For many in the affected community, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with unchecked authority and blind trust. It also reinforces the need for vigilance, particularly when it comes to the safety and protection of minors.

As investigations proceed, attention remains focused on ensuring that due process is followed and that the outcome reflects both justice for the victim and a deterrent against similar incidents in the future.
