The Kano State Government is facing criticism after videos and photos circulated online showing women displaying branded underwear allegedly distributed during a government-linked empowerment or palliative programme associated with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
The images, which spread widely across Facebook, X, Instagram and messaging platforms, show packs of women’s underwear carrying political branding linked to Governor Yusuf. The posts triggered strong reactions online, with critics questioning the choice of items and the use of political branding on intimate clothing.
As of the time of reporting, there was no verified official statement from the Kano State Government directly confirming the procurement details, budget, distribution scale, or the exact government agency responsible for the items.
Some social media users described the move as insensitive given economic hardship, while others argued underwear is a legitimate household necessity and could be part of women-focused welfare support. The debate has largely centred on the branding and symbolism rather than the utility of the items themselves.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has served as Kano governor since 2023, has previously launched several welfare and relief programmes in the state. However, no independently verified government document was immediately available linking the viral distribution specifically to a formal statewide policy announcement.
Political observers note that public backlash often intensifies when welfare materials carry politician names or campaign-style branding, as opponents frame such programmes as image-building rather than transparent social support. In this case, the controversy appears driven by optics and public perception.
Without an official procurement release or ministry clarification, several key questions remain unanswered: who funded the items, how many were distributed, what criteria determined beneficiaries, and whether the branding was authorised by the state government.
Until authorities issue a formal statement, the verified facts remain limited to the existence of widely circulated visuals and the public controversy that followed.
