The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested two suspected vandals who were caught in the act of looting a truck that had fallen into a valley along the Calabar–Itu Highway, an official has confirmed. The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Adamu Hamza and tricycle operator Anthony James, were apprehended on Sunday evening following a tip-off from a member of the public.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 11, 2026, the command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, revealed that officers acted on intelligence that criminal elements were vandalising a truck that had crashed near the Afaha community. "Operatives of the Command acted swiftly on credible intelligence received through a tricycle operator regarding the activities of criminal elements vandalizing and stealing from a truck that had fallen into a valley at Afaha along the Calabar–Itu Highway," the statement reads.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found Adamu Hamza, a native of Maiduguri, Borno State, in possession of four suspected stolen truck tyres. A follow-up investigation led to the arrest of Anthony James, who allegedly used his tricycle to cart away the stolen items from the accident scene. Both suspects are currently in police custody, and efforts to apprehend other fleeing accomplices are ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, has issued a stern warning to criminal elements to desist from looting accident scenes, reaffirming the command's commitment to strengthening surveillance and deploying intelligence-driven policing strategies to safeguard lives and property across the state. The police have also called on members of the public to continue providing timely information to aid in crime prevention.
