The Nigerian entertainment industry was plunged into mourning on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, following the death of beloved actor Alex Ekubo at the age of 40. Multiple reports indicate that the award‑winning film star and former Mr. Nigeria contestant passed away at a hospital in Lagos after complications from an illness, though the exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed by his family or management.

The news first spread rapidly after a fellow actor, Godwin Nnadiekwe, posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. “I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me,” Nnadiekwe wrote. “Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan. To think you already prepared your will — it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.” In the caption, he also hinted at a battle with cancer, writing: “Goodnight Alex. Cancer you did this one ❤️”.

Ekubo’s death came after a prolonged period of public concern. The actor’s last Instagram post was on December 30, 2024, and he had remained unusually silent on social media for over a year. During that time, fans repeatedly visited his page to ask about his well‑being. In late 2025, his close friend, actor IK Ogbonna, reassured the public that Ekubo was simply taking a “personal break” to rest away from the pressure of constant public attention and was in “excellent health”. Another colleague, Stanley Ontop, also described rumours of serious illness as false at the time.

Born Alexx Ekubo‑Okwaraeke on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and a native of Arochukwu in Abia State, Ekubo rose to national prominence after finishing as the first runner‑up in the 2010 Mr. Nigeria contest. A graduate of Law from the University of Calabar, he quickly established himself as a versatile talent in Nollywood, starring in major blockbusters such as Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, and Omo Ghetto: The Saga. His charm, comedic timing, and romantic lead roles made him a household name and one of the most bankable stars in contemporary African cinema.

Beyond acting, Ekubo was a fashion icon and a vocal humanitarian. In 2020, the United Nations named him one of the “Most Influential People of African Descent under 40” for his contributions to entertainment and social development across the continent. He was also an active brand ambassador, most notably signing a deal with VAVA Furniture in Lagos in recent years.

As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from colleagues and fans. Fellow actor IK Ogbonna, who had earlier defended Ekubo’s absence from the public eye, was among those expressing shock and grief. Descriptions of Ekubo as a “vibrant soul” and a “gentleman of the industry” dominated social media platforms. The Nollywood community described his passing as a void that would be difficult to fill.

The Ekubo family has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the cause of death or funeral arrangements. TVC News, which was among the first to confirm the development, reiterated that details surrounding his illness and passing are still emerging. As of the time of this report, no independently verified statement has been released by his management or medical authorities, and many of the circulating claims remain unconfirmed.

Alex Ekubo is survived by his parents, siblings, and a wide circle of friends and colleagues in the entertainment industry. His memory is being celebrated for the joy he brought to millions through his work and for his gracious, professional presence both on and off the screen.
