Tension and panic erupted in the Old Port Harcourt Township on Tuesday after a group of young men suspected to be internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys,” lost control of their speeding vehicle and crashed it into a commercial Keke bus along the busy Niger Street. Eyewitnesses told local reporters that the suspects were driving at dangerously high speed when they rammed into the tricycle, even though the Keke bus, according to multiple accounts, had the right of way. The forceful impact left several passengers with serious injuries and sent nearby traders and pedestrians running for safety.

Immediately after the crash, residents and passersby rushed to the scene to pull the injured out of the wreckage. Victims were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. As the extent of injuries remained unclear as of press time, witnesses described a chaotic and frightening scene, expressing anger over what they called the reckless culture of some wealthy young men in the city.

The anger quickly turned to action. Witnesses said the suspects attempted to flee the scene on foot after the accident but were chased down by angry youths and members of the public. The crowd apprehended the young men and handed them over to police officers who responded to the distress call. No official statement had been released by the Rivers State Police Command as of the time of this report, but sources indicated that an investigation into the incident has commenced.

The crash has intensified public frustration over the conduct of suspected internet fraudsters in Port Harcourt, who are often seen driving luxury cars at high speed through the city. Residents of Old Township have called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and more stringent action by security agencies to address what they described as a growing menace. This incident also comes just days after the Rivers State Police Command announced fresh restrictions on tricycle movement in parts of Port Harcourt to curb “one chance” robberies, using commercial Keke buses to rob passengers. The Tuesday accident has now raised fresh security and safety concerns along Niger Street, a major road in the Old Township.

As the injured continue to receive treatment at undisclosed medical facilities, many in the community are asking how long they must endure the consequences of reckless driving by individuals allegedly funded by illicit cyber activities.
