The headquarters of the Anambra State Police Command became the scene of a dramatic parade on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, as operatives presented the personal driver of a Delta State-based Anglican bishop and an alleged accomplice, who are accused of conspiring to murder the clergyman and steal his Toyota Landcruiser SUV. The prime suspect, whose name has not been officially released, is accused of betraying his employer, a bishop identified only as Bishop Chinedu, by collaborating with criminal elements to rob him of his vehicle. The plan, however, took a gruesome turn when the operation turned deadly, resulting in the bishop’s death during the attack.
According to preliminary information gathered by the police, the driver had initially planned with his accomplices to dispossess the bishop of his Toyota Landcruiser. However, the plot went fatally wrong, leading to the cleric’s murder. Following this, the suspects allegedly drove the stolen SUV from Delta State into neighboring Anambra State, where they sought a buyer for the expensive vehicle. The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrests, stating that the case was still under investigation and that more details would be released soon.
While the precise circumstances of the murder remain under investigation, police sources revealed that the suspects had already secured a potential buyer for the stolen vehicle. “They brought the vehicle into Anambra to sell it, and the man you see with him was the one who wanted to buy the vehicle. In the process, they were arrested,” CP Orutugu told journalists. Police operatives prevented the two suspects from speaking with journalists, insisting that inquiries were still at a preliminary stage.
This case is part of a broader crackdown by the Anambra Police Command on violent crime. In a separate but related operation, the police reportedly arrested a total of 17 suspects, including individuals linked to the kidnapping of a medical doctor. During that operation, commandos recovered a General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), rocket launchers, and a cache of ammunition. However, the operation came at a cost, with the police confirming the death of one of their officers in the line of duty.
The arrest of the bishop’s driver has triggered a wave of outrage and calls for greater scrutiny of domestic staff. In his reaction, the police commissioner urged members of the public to be more thorough in the recruitment and management of domestic workers, drivers, and household employees. He also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing in protecting lives and property. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to track down any other members of the alleged criminal gang.
