A police officer attached to the Hotoro Division in Kano State, identified as Sani S.O., has been killed during a violent clash with suspected thugs, just weeks before his scheduled retirement, according to security and family sources.
The incident reportedly occurred when officers were deployed to disperse rival groups engaged in street violence in parts of Kano metropolis. During the operation, the officer was allegedly struck by a projectile believed to be fired from a locally made weapon, commonly referred to as a “dane gun,” used by one of the suspects.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment but was confirmed dead on arrival, sources familiar with the situation said.
The late officer was said to have served in the Nigeria Police Force for more than three decades and was widely described by colleagues and residents as a disciplined and well-respected officer who was nearing the end of his service career.
Security sources said the confrontation broke out after police responded to reports of violent clashes between rival thuggery groups in the area, which have become a recurring security challenge in parts of Kano metropolis. During the intervention, the situation escalated, leading to the fatal attack on the officer.
Eyewitness accounts suggested that officers were attempting to restore order when they came under attack from armed individuals within the crowd. The officer was among those directly engaged in dispersing the groups when he was fatally injured.
Following the incident, additional security operatives were deployed to the area to prevent further escalation, while efforts began to identify and track down those responsible for the attack.
Community members described the development as tragic and deeply unsettling, noting that the officer had served the country for many years and was just weeks away from retirement after a long career in public service.
The Kano State Police Command is expected to issue a formal statement as investigations continue into the identity of the attackers and the exact circumstances that led to the officer’s death.
Kano has in recent years experienced periodic outbreaks of violence involving youth gangs and street groups, prompting repeated security operations aimed at restoring order and reducing criminal activity in densely populated areas of the state.
Authorities have reiterated that attacks on security personnel will be thoroughly investigated, with those found responsible expected to face prosecution under Nigerian law.
Investigations are ongoing.
