In a memo released on the 21st of May 2026, the Enugu State Police Command has announced a major breakthrough in its ongoing offensive against kidnapping syndicates operating in the state, following an intelligence-led raid on a forest hideout along the Amufie–Obollo-Afor boundary in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area.
The operation, which was carried out on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at approximately 7:40 p.m., resulted in a fierce gun duel between police operatives and suspected kidnappers. According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the police team encountered armed hoodlums who opened fire immediately upon sighting them. The operatives, however, responded with superior firepower, effectively repelling the criminals and forcing them to flee into the surrounding bushes with varying degrees of gunshot wounds.
This raid was conducted on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, as part of sustained intelligence-driven efforts to crack down on identified black spots and dismantle criminal hideouts across the state. Following the exchange of fire, a thorough search of the hideout led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, sixty-four (64) rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, one red TVS Neo-NX motorcycle, and other incriminating exhibits.
CP Giwa has since ordered continued operational and investigative efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle their networks. He reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating violent crimes and ensuring the safety of residents across Enugu State. The police have also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to support security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing crime prevention and law enforcement efforts.
