The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man identified as Bashar Aliyu for allegedly stabbing his 70-year-old grandfather, Ibrahim Maisaje, to death in Sabon Kariya Village, Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
Police authorities confirmed that the incident occurred on Saturday, May 17, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m. inside the victim’s room in the rural community located in Ganjuwa LGA.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Nafiu Habib, the incident was first reported to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ganjuwa by a 58-year-old resident of the area shortly after the attack occurred.
Police said preliminary findings showed that the suspect allegedly attacked his grandfather with a sharp object believed to be a knife while the elderly man was inside his room.
Following the report, detectives and other police operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene. Officers reportedly evacuated the victim to the General Hospital in Kafin Madaki for emergency treatment. However, medical personnel later confirmed Ibrahim Maisaje dead shortly after arrival at the hospital.
The Bauchi Police Command stated that the suspect, Bashar Aliyu, was arrested shortly after the incident and taken into custody for interrogation.
Authorities also disclosed that no weapon was recovered at the scene during the initial police operation, although investigators said inquiries were continuing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and directed detectives to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the killing.
The police commissioner also urged residents of the state to embrace peaceful conflict resolution and promptly report suspicious activities or violent disputes to security agencies before situations escalate into tragedy.
As of Friday, May 22, 2026, police authorities had not publicly disclosed the exact motive behind the alleged attack, while investigators continued questioning the suspect and gathering statements from witnesses and family members in the community.
The incident has generated concern among residents of Sabon Kariya Village and surrounding communities in Ganjuwa Local Government Area, where locals described the killing as shocking due to the close family relationship between the suspect and the victim.
The latest case adds to a growing number of violent domestic incidents recently reported in parts of Bauchi State. In April 2024, Bauchi police arrested another suspect accused of fatally stabbing his elder brother during a dispute in Bauchi metropolis.
Police authorities in Bauchi have repeatedly warned against violent reactions to family disputes, substance abuse conflicts, and domestic disagreements, urging residents to seek mediation and lawful intervention instead of resorting to violence.
As investigations continue, the Bauchi State Police Command said the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.
