Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa, a judge of the Federal High Court attached to the Kano Judicial Division, has died after reportedly collapsing at his residence in Kano State.
Reports published on Saturday, May 23, 2026, stated that the judge slumped in his living room on Thursday evening, May 21, and was immediately rushed to a hospital where medical personnel later confirmed him dead.
Sources within the Federal High Court in Abuja confirmed the development on Saturday, noting that the late jurist had already been buried on Friday, May 22, in accordance with Islamic burial rites.
The Director of Information of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, also confirmed the death, stating that Justice Yunusa passed away at the State Medical Centre in Kano after the sudden collapse at his residence.
Justice Yunusa was widely known within Nigeria’s judiciary for presiding over several politically sensitive and high-profile cases, particularly matters arising from the 2023 general elections.
Among the notable cases handled by the late judge was a post-election suit filed by Ibrahim Haruna-Ibrahim challenging the candidacy and certificates of return of Labour Party candidates declared winners in Kano State and other parts of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory. The defendants in the case were the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
In one of his rulings connected to the matter, Justice Yunusa held that his court lacked jurisdiction to order the issuance of certificates of return relating to candidates who were not parties before the Kano Division of the court. The ruling drew national attention during the legal disputes that followed the 2023 elections.
Court officials and associates described the late jurist as diligent and hardworking during his years on the bench. One source quoted in multiple reports said Justice Yunusa handled “many high-profile cases and dispensed justice accordingly.”
As of Saturday afternoon, no official medical cause of death had been publicly disclosed by authorities beyond reports that the judge collapsed at home before being taken to hospital.
