It was a historic moment on Saturday, 23rd May 2026, as the Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri, in Ekeremor Local Government Area, held its maiden combined convocation ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of technical and vocational education in the state. The event was a celebration of academic excellence and a demonstration of the institution's commitment to technical education, manpower development, entrepreneurship, innovation, and youth empowerment.

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, who attended the ceremony as the Visitor to the institution, expressed delight over the formal relocation of the Polytechnic to its permanent site in Aleibiri Town. The governor noted that the institution, established in 2014, commenced academic activities during the 2019/2020 academic session. He also expressed excitement that all programmes presented for full and interim accreditation received approval from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).

In his remarks, Governor Diri congratulated the 413 graduands who were awarded National Diploma and Higher National Diploma certificates. He stressed that the state government would continue to invest in the infrastructural development of the Polytechnic to enable it to achieve its core objectives. Acknowledging the contributions of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and other intervention agencies, the governor described the agency as a worthy partner in the state's educational advancement.

Governor Diri further announced that he has directed relevant ministries and agencies to ensure the implementation of earlier promises made to the school, including the provision of two coaster buses, perimeter fencing, additional classrooms, and other basic facilities. On electricity, he said the state government would extend power from newly installed gas turbines to Sagbama through Aleibiri to Ekeremor rather than procure a diesel-powered generator for the institution. He also disclosed that his administration has shifted its emphasis from white-collar education to technical and vocational training aimed at producing self-reliant graduates.

The Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Wisdom Clinton Soreh, while commending the governor for his unwavering support and commitment to the growth of the institution, described the maiden convocation as a defining milestone in the institution’s history. He added that management has been able to identify and catalogue the institution's challenges and is dealing with them gradually. The convocation lecture titled “Bridging The Gap Between Skills Acquisition And Enterprise Creation: The Role Of Polytechnics In Nigeria’s Economic Future” was delivered by Professor Promise Mebine, Vice Chancellor of Federal University Otuoke.
