Tension in Bomo village, a farming community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, turned deadly in the early hours of Saturday, May 23, 2026, when a bitter altercation between two neighbors, Sani Haruna and Bashiru Saidu, escalated into a fatal stabbing. What began as a fierce quarrel between the two residents ended with Sani Haruna suffering severe stab wounds. He later died at a medical facility in the nearby town of Miango, despite efforts by attending doctors to save him. The incident has not only left a family in mourning but has also heightened anxieties in a local government area already grappling with deep-seated communal and sectarian violence.
Troops from Sector 1 of Operation Safe Haven, under the broader military task force Operation Enduring Peace, were the first to respond to a distress call at around 2 a.m. on May 23. Upon arriving at the scene, the soldiers found Sani Haruna bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds. According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the injuries were allegedly inflicted by Bashiru Saidu during the physical altercation between the two men. While soldiers and others rushed Sani Haruna to a medical facility, he was later confirmed dead by medical personnel. The precise nature of the quarrel that preceded the stabbing remains unclear, though some community sources have described the encounter as a "violent altercation" over an undisclosed personal matter.
Following the incident, troops of Operation Enduring Peace, acting on directives, swiftly launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspect. Working in close collaboration with members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), they tracked and successfully apprehended Saidu. The suspect was taken into custody for further investigation and is expected to face legal action, with officials promising to push for prosecution. Authorities have assured residents of continued efforts to maintain peace and security across communities in the state, while also urging citizens to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid resorting to violence. The arrest of Bashiru Saidu is the latest in a series of security operations in Bassa LGA, a region that has witnessed a troubling resurgence of violence in recent weeks.
While this incident is primarily a case of personal conflict turning deadly, it unfolds against a backdrop of persistent communal and sectarian crises in Bassa LGA, which have often pitted farmers against herders. Just days before the deadly altercation, on May 8, 2026, several civilians, including pregnant women and children, were killed in Ngbra-Zongo village, also in Bassa LGA, in an attack widely attributed to herders. The tragedy in Bomo has thus served as a stark reminder that even seemingly isolated incidents of violence have the potential to ignite broader communal tensions. As the community comes to terms with the loss of one of its own, many are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the police investigation, hoping that justice will be served and that this painful episode will not further exacerbate the fragile peace in the area.
