Speaking after participating in the exercise at Ward 3, Iperu 1, in Ikenne local government area, Governor Abiodun commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise and the overwhelming support enjoyed by the president across the state. He described the successful conduct of the APC primaries in Ogun as a reflection of the peace, unity and political maturity within the party. “The peace in the state has defined us as a state that knows how to organise, plan, engage, discuss, and manage party affairs without rancour,” he said.
Abiodun expressed confidence that the APC would emerge victorious in the 2027 elections, noting that President Tinubu’s reforms and policies had laid the foundation for a new Nigeria. Senator Shuaib Salisu, representing Ogun Central, described the primaries as a strong demonstration of the party’s growing popularity, internal democracy and public confidence in its leadership. “It is like we are already having a general election. We are seeing members of the party community in their thousands in various wards,” he said, stressing that despite intense political activities, no violence was recorded across the 236 wards involved in the exercise.
The direct primary was held simultaneously across all 236 wards in the 20 local government areas of Ogun State, with party members turning out in large numbers to affirm President Tinubu as the party’s candidate for the 2027 general election. The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), all of whom attested to the peaceful and credible conduct of the process.
President Tinubu’s victory in Ogun State was part of a nationwide sweep in which the president recorded similarly decisive wins in other states, including Jigawa (206,520 votes), Imo (582,960 votes), Osun (100,880 votes), Rivers (280,468 votes), Gombe (450,517 votes), and Delta (407,646 votes). In all these states, his sole challenger, Stanley Osifo, recorded zero or negligible votes, reaffirming the overwhelming support enjoyed by the president within the APC structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The successful conduct of the direct primary across the country has been hailed by party leaders as a major achievement for internal democracy in the APC. The party’s National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, had earlier announced that extensive consultations and engagements across the three senatorial districts helped strengthen party cohesion, deepen participation and give members a stronger sense of belonging. With the presidential primary now concluded, the APC is expected to turn its attention to the 2027 general elections, where President Tinubu will seek a second term in office.
