The ceremony took place at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja following the nationwide collation of the direct primary election results, which saw the President secure an overwhelming victory. The event, which formally marked the start of Tinubu's 2027 presidential campaign, was attended by top party officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and several APC governors. The presentation of the certificate and party flag to the President serves as the party's official confirmation of his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.
Addressing the gathering, President Tinubu accepted the nomination with "humility and profound gratitude," framing his second-term bid as a necessary step to consolidate on the reforms of his first term. "Continuity is essential—to consolidate reform, secure progress, and strengthen the foundation of a modern Nigeria," he said. He highlighted key achievements of his administration, including the removal of wasteful fuel subsidies, the unification of exchange rates, and the strengthening of the naira, while acknowledging the inflationary pressures caused by global economic turmoil.
Earlier, the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, expressed satisfaction with the smooth collation of results, commending the agents for their scrutiny and the governors who served as returning officers for their sacrifice. President Tinubu also commended the party leadership for successfully conducting the party's first direct presidential primary.
The direct primary, a first in the party's history, was conducted across 8,809 wards nationwide on Saturday, May 23, 2026. It followed the Electoral Act 2026, signed into law by President Tinubu in February, which mandates parties to adopt either a consensus or direct primary method. The exercise was supervised by state governors and appointed state coordinators, with results collated and transmitted to the national collation centre in Abuja. The Presidential Primary Election Committee, chaired by former Senate President Pius Anyim, oversaw the entire process.
In his remarks after receiving the certificate of return, Tinubu praised the party’s leadership for a well-organised primary and thanked the millions of party members who turned out to vote. He described the victory as a "challenge to do more" for Nigeria and pledged to intensify efforts on security, education, and infrastructure in the coming years.
The President's sole challenger, Mr. Stanley Osifo, a businessman from Edo State, has since accepted the outcome of the primary, congratulating Tinubu on his victory. He had purchased the party's N100 million nomination form after a planned consensus arrangement collapsed.
With the formal presentation of the certificate of return, the All Progressives Congress has now set the stage for the 2027 general elections, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will seek a second term in office.
