Creektown, Odukpani LGA, Cross River State – A suspected serial killer identified only as Akaninyene has been arrested by a joint team of security operatives, including the Nigerian Army and tactical special forces, following weeks of intelligence reports linking him to a string of disappearances and gruesome murders in the community.

The suspect was tracked to a secluded hut hidden deep inside a forest in Abanyama, Ukim Ita Community. According to security sources, Akaninyene attempted to flee after reaching for a weapon inside the hut but was swiftly apprehended by the operatives.

A search of the hideout led to the discovery of eight shallow graves containing bodies buried without heads. In an attempt to conceal the burial sites, plantain crops had been planted directly over the graves.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing about 30 people in the area. He also reportedly revealed that a female accomplice helped lure victims before they were killed.

The latest incident, said to have occurred on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, reportedly raised suspicion after residents heard cries and sounds of a struggle. Community leaders and youths alerted authorities, leading to the operation that resulted in the suspect’s arrest.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the incident is still being verified by the police command.

Efforts to obtain further comments from the Cross River State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
