A man identified as Sodiq Adebayo, who was reportedly travelling for the Eid-el-Kabir holiday celebration, has been arrested after allegedly knocking down and killing two police officers in Osogbo, Osun State, while attempting to evade arrest during a traffic enforcement operation. The incident occurred on Friday, May 29, 2026, and has sparked widespread concern over reckless driving and attacks on law enforcement personnel.
According to reports, the tragedy happened at about 11:00 a.m. along the Osogbo–Ikirun Road when police officers attached to a highway patrol team stopped a commercial vehicle for routine checks. Authorities said the driver allegedly refused to comply with instructions from officers and attempted to speed away from the scene.
During the attempted escape, the vehicle reportedly rammed into two police officers who were carrying out their official duties by the roadside. The impact left the officers with severe injuries, and despite efforts to save them, both officers later died. The incident caused panic among road users and residents in the area as security personnel moved quickly to secure the scene.
The Osun State Police Command confirmed the development on Friday, May 29, 2026, through a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi. According to him, the suspect was immediately pursued and arrested after the fatal incident.
Ojelabi explained that preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect was travelling for the Sallah holiday when he encountered the police checkpoint. He said the driver allegedly chose to flee rather than cooperate with officers, a decision that resulted in the deadly collision.
“The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody. Investigation is ongoing to determine all the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police spokesperson stated. He added that the Command viewed the deaths of the officers as a serious matter and assured that the suspect would face prosecution after investigations are concluded.
Police authorities have not yet publicly released the identities of the deceased officers pending formal notification of their families. However, sources within the Command described the officers as experienced personnel who were actively engaged in traffic monitoring and security duties at the time of the incident.
The Osun State Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Umar Abba, reportedly expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and condemned the incident. He urged motorists to obey lawful instructions from security personnel and warned against reckless actions capable of endangering lives.
The incident occurred as security agencies across Osun State intensified patrols and traffic monitoring operations ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebration. Authorities had earlier announced increased deployments on major highways to ensure safety during the festive travel period.
Road safety advocates have repeatedly warned against excessive speeding and attempts to evade security checkpoints, especially during festive periods when highways often experience increased traffic volume. Stone Reporters note that collisions involving fleeing motorists and law enforcement officers have become a growing concern in parts of Nigeria, prompting renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and public safety measures.
As of Saturday, May 30, 2026, police authorities said investigations remained ongoing, while the suspect continued to be held in custody pending possible criminal charges related to the deaths of the two officers.
