The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of an Almajiri student, Musa Hudu Mai Unguwa, who died after being allegedly attacked by a group of youths in Kanya Babba community, Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, in an incident that has sparked outrage and renewed concern over youth violence in rural communities.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2026, shortly after the victim left his Islamic school following his bath and walked towards a nearby school field where some youths were gathered. According to eyewitness accounts and information provided by his teacher, the boy was allegedly called over by the group under the pretext of being offered kola nuts.
The victim’s teacher, Alaramma Malam Salisu Yusha’u, said that once Musa approached the group, he was allegedly assaulted and beaten severely without provocation. He explained that the attack left the child unconscious, and he was later rushed to a nearby hospital where medical personnel confirmed him dead despite emergency efforts to save his life.
Musa Hudu Mai Unguwa, who hailed from Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was reportedly residing in Kanya Babba where he was attending an Islamic school. His family was informed immediately after the incident and later arrived in the community to receive his remains.
Following the incident, police authorities in Babura Division launched an investigation and directed that the burial proceed after notifying the district head and other relevant local authorities. Security sources said the decision followed standard procedures after confirmation of death in custodial or communal incidents requiring official clearance.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the attack, while another suspect believed to have participated in the assault has fled and is currently being tracked. Investigators are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to establish the roles of all individuals involved.
Community members in Kanya Babba described the killing as shocking and unjustified, noting that the victim was a young student with no known conflict with the youths involved. The incident has heightened tension in the area, with residents calling for stronger protection of vulnerable children, particularly Almajiri pupils who move freely within rural communities.
A local activist, Comrade Abba Isma’il Kanya, condemned the killing and urged security agencies to ensure that all perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted. He also called for preventive measures to address youth misconduct and improve community security structures in Babura LGA.
As of Saturday, May 30, 2026, police said investigations remain ongoing, with the arrested suspect in custody while efforts continue to apprehend the fleeing suspect and uncover the full circumstances of the attack.
