The Edo State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of a 30-year-old interior and event decorator, Esohe Aigbe, who was attacked and fatally injured in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
According to information confirmed by the police, the incident occurred on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at Ojo Street in the Ogida area of Benin City, where Aigbe had gone to assist a friend with decoration work for a burial ceremony.
Reports indicate that after completing the decoration assignment, Aigbe remained at the venue when she was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants armed with a machete. Witnesses said the attackers fled the scene immediately after the assault, leaving the victim with severe injuries.
Residents and other bystanders reportedly rushed to her aid and transported her to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for emergency treatment. However, she later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the attack. Medical personnel were unable to save her because of the severity of the wounds.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the command had commenced an investigation into the killing and had already arrested one suspect.
“I’m aware of a murder case in the area. We already have one suspect in our custody, and investigation is still ongoing as I speak to you,” Ikoedem said.
Police authorities have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or the possible motive behind the attack. Investigators are also working to determine whether additional individuals were involved in the killing.
The death of Aigbe has generated concern among residents of Benin City, with many calling for a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible. The incident has also renewed discussions about violent crime and public safety in parts of Edo State.
As investigations continue, the Edo State Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the murder and bring all perpetrators to justice.
