Jonathan’s Possible 2027 Bid Is a Response to Public Demand, Not Personal Ambition — Ememobong

The National Publicity Secretary of the Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ini Ememobong, has said that former President Goodluck Jonathan is not seeking the presidency out of personal ambition but is responding to widespread calls from Nigerians who want him to return and lead the country.

Ememobong made the remarks amid ongoing efforts by the Turaki-led PDP faction to position Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The faction has already screened and cleared the former president as its sole presidential aspirant and scheduled a special convention to ratify his candidacy.

According to Ememobong, Nigeria requires a leader capable of uniting the country and guiding it through a period of recovery and national rebuilding.

“Goodluck Jonathan’s running is not his ambition but a call from the people for him to run,” Ememong said.

He added that the next four years should focus on healing divisions, restoring public confidence, exercising patience in governance, and rebuilding national institutions.

“The next four years must be four years of healing, restoration, patience and nation building. The man best suited to do that is Goodluck Jonathan,” he stated.

The comments come as political discussions around the 2027 presidential election continue to intensify. The Turaki-led faction has maintained that Jonathan remains a registered member of the PDP and has fulfilled the party's membership requirements. The group previously dismissed campaign posters linking him to other political parties, insisting that he remains within its fold.

However, Jonathan himself has not publicly declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election. Reports indicate that while the Turaki-led faction has endorsed and screened him, the former president has yet to make a formal announcement regarding his candidacy.

The move has also deepened divisions within the PDP, with rival factions disputing the legitimacy of the endorsement process. A faction aligned with Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has described the planned endorsement and convention as unauthorized and urged Jonathan to distance himself from the process.

Despite the controversy, supporters of the former president argue that his record in office and his role in Nigeria's peaceful democratic transition in 2015 make him a suitable figure to lead efforts aimed at national reconciliation and stability.

The debate over Jonathan's political future is expected to remain a major issue within opposition politics as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
