JIBIA, Nigeria – Residents of Babban Gida community in Bugaje Ward, Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State, are celebrating a rare victory after bandits who attempted to invade the village late on Sunday, June 7, 2026, were met with stiff resistance from local youths and personnel of the 17 Brigade, forcing the attackers to retreat in disarray.

Sources told journalists that the bandits approached the community under the cover of darkness but were immediately confronted by vigilant youths who raised the alarm and blocked their entry. The attackers, who had likely hoped to abduct residents and rustle livestock, faced unexpected opposition. When personnel from the 17 Brigade arrived swiftly at the scene, the bandits abandoned their plan and fled into nearby bush paths, leaving behind some of their belongings.

Although reports indicate that a number of livestock were rustled in neighbouring villages within the same area, the successful defense of Babban Gida itself stands as a testament to the courage, vigilance, and resilience of the community youths, as well as the dedication and rapid response of the troops on the ground. The incident underscores how community-led security initiatives, when combined with professional military support, can effectively repel attacks that might otherwise end in tragedy.

A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity praised the bravery of the young men who risked their lives. “They stood firm. They did not run. The bandits were shocked because they expected us to panic. But our youths showed that we will not surrender our village to anyone,” he said.

The Jibia Local Government Area has been one of the hotspots of banditry in Katsina State, with frequent attacks on farming communities, abduction for ransom, and cattle rustling. However, the successful defence of Babban Gida has lifted the spirits of residents who have grown weary of constant fear. The Katsina State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but a security source confirmed that no lives were lost in the community during the attack.

While the rustling of livestock in nearby villages remains a concern, residents of Babban Gida say the outcome of Sunday night’s confrontation sends a clear message to bandits: the community is no longer an easy target. “We have shown that we can protect ourselves when we are united. And with the soldiers supporting us, the bandits will think twice before coming back,” one youth participant said.

The government has repeatedly encouraged local communities to collaborate with security agencies, and the events in Babban Gida offer a model of how such cooperation can yield positive results. However, community members are also calling for more permanent security measures, including the establishment of a police post or military outpost in the area, to prevent future incursions and respond faster when attacks occur.

As of Monday morning, the 17 Brigade had not released an official statement, but military sources confirmed that troops remain on alert and are conducting patrols around Jibia LGA to prevent the bandits from regrouping. For now, the people of Babban Gida can sleep a little easier, knowing that when the bandits came, they were not alone.
