The Osun State Police Command has released the Secretary of the Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, whom it arrested in a dramatic early‑morning raid on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The arrest sparked intense apprehension within the state's media community, with the union later attributing the incident to a case of mistaken identity.

The circumstances of the arrest remain unclear. Police operatives from the State Criminal Investigation Department stormed Akindoju's residence in Osogbo in the early hours of Thursday and took him away. His whereabouts were initially unknown, and attempts to reach him by telephone were unsuccessful. In a subsequent update, the Osun NUJ chairman said the union had been able to track Akindoju to the cells of the Police Public Relations Unit at the police headquarters, and suggested that the arrest might have been a case of mistaken identity.

The arrest was confirmed by the Chairman of the Osun NUJ, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin, in a message posted on the council's official WhatsApp platform. The chairman said he had contacted the Police Public Relations Officer in the state but had yet to get a clear explanation on the matter. The Chairman of the Rave FM Chapel of the NUJ, where Akindoju is a member, also confirmed that the journalist had contacted the station's management shortly before he was taken away.

The Osun State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident as of Thursday, confirming the reason for his detention. By the end of the day, however, Akindoju had been released unconditionally.
