Operatives of the Zamfara State Police Command have rescued five travellers abducted by suspected bandits along the Anka–Bukkuyum Road, after a fierce gun battle that forced the criminals to abandon their victims and flee with gunshot wounds.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said in a statement on Thursday, 11 June 2026, that the incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, 10 June, when armed bandits barricaded the highway and seized the five commuters.

According to the police, operatives of the Anti‑Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) acted on credible intelligence that the bandits had blocked the Anka–Bukkuyum Road and taken the travellers. A distress call was immediately received, and a police tactical team swiftly mobilised to the scene, tracking the kidnappers into the surrounding bush.

The operatives intercepted the fleeing criminals and engaged them in a fierce gun duel. Faced with the superior firepower and determination of the police team, the bandits abandoned their mission and retreated further into the forest, with several of them suspected to have sustained gunshot wounds. The operation resulted in the successful rescue of all five victims without injury.

Security forces also recovered two motorcycles left behind by the fleeing criminals, which were believed to have been used in the abduction.

DSP Abubakar reiterated the command’s unwavering commitment to combating criminal activities across the state and ensuring the safety of all residents. He further urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and actionable information to facilitate prompt responses.

Following the operation, security forces have intensified patrols and clearance missions along the Anka–Bukuyum corridor in an effort to prevent further attacks and track down fleeing suspects.
