The Anambra State Government, through the Ministry of Health, has sealed an unregistered health facility, Vick‑Benedict’s Home, and several maternity centres and traditional birth attendant (TBA) homes in Ifitedunu, Dunukofia Local Government Area, for operating without licences and engaging in unprofessional medical practices.
A team of ministry officials led by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, carried out the enforcement action on Thursday, 11 June 2026, after investigations uncovered that the facilities were providing medical services without the requisite approval from the state health authorities.
Dr Obidike told journalists that the clampdown was part of the government’s ongoing effort to eliminate illegal health practices and ensure that only licensed and properly regulated facilities operate in Anambra State. He declared that unprofessional healthcare operators would no longer be tolerated, saying, “Following the discovery that these facilities were operating without licences, they have been closed and sealed. Their operators are to report to the Department of Medical Services at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, for further clarification and regulatory action.”
The commissioner described the enforcement as a continuation of the government’s “business as usual” warning to quacks, and added that operators of unregistered hospitals, maternity homes, rehabilitation centres and TBA facilities must regularise their operations or risk prosecution. He further urged residents to patronise only registered and accredited health facilities, stressing that the state remains committed to protecting the lives and well‑being of all Ndi Anambra through strict enforcement of healthcare standards.
This latest action follows earlier crackdowns, including the sealing of Madonna Mercy Maternity and Clinic in Nnewi in July 2025 and the closure of 54 health facilities across the state over the preceding three years for various unprofessional practices. The state government has vowed to sustain the pressure on illegal health providers to safeguard the health of the public.
