Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has declared that his administration is on high alert in response to escalating security threats across the country, unveiling plans to deploy technology-driven solutions to strengthen the state’s security architecture and safeguard lives and property. The declaration was made on Friday, June 12, 2026, during an All Progressives Congress (APC) strategic meeting held at the Presidential Lodge, Ibara, Abeokuta, the state capital.
Expressing deep concern over the growing menace of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping in parts of the country, the governor assured residents that his government would take proactive steps to prevent criminal elements from establishing a foothold in Ogun State. “We are rising to the occasion of insecurity by deploying technology to safeguard the lives of our people. We will not wait for anyone to come and attack us,” Abiodun said. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring residents’ safety through strategic investments in security infrastructure, enhanced collaboration with security agencies, and sustained community engagement.
The governor’s remarks come against the backdrop of recent security breaches in the state. On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 35 Artillery Brigade, Major Idereghi Akari, confirmed the killing of a soldier and four others during a failed kidnapping attempt involving Chinese expatriates at Magbon in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area. Akari stated that one suspected kidnapper was also killed, while another soldier and two police officers sustained gunshot wounds during the incident when a joint security team responded to a distress call and came under attack near a dredging site.
Beyond the general security architecture, Abiodun disclosed that special attention was being given to the security of schools and other educational institutions. He stressed that children, as the future of the state, must be adequately protected. According to the governor, the government has intensified security measures around schools through increased surveillance, deployment of security personnel to strategic locations, stronger inter-agency cooperation, and the use of modern technology to monitor vulnerable areas. These interventions are designed to deter criminal activities, detect threats early, and ensure that schools remain safe and conducive environments for learning. The Ogun State Police Command’s School Protection Squad remains active, vigilant, and fully operational in carrying out its mandate of safeguarding educational institutions across the state, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.
On the socio-economic front, Abiodun revealed that while his administration had recorded significant strides in infrastructure development, greater emphasis would now be placed on human capital development and social intervention programmes aimed at cushioning the effects of prevailing economic challenges on residents. He reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of the people and ensuring that the dividends of democracy are felt across all segments of society.
The governor also commended members of the APC in Ogun State for conducting peaceful and crisis-free primary elections, describing the exercise as a reflection of political maturity, unity and party discipline. “Our primary was inclusive, transparent and fair. We sat down, discussed and chose our candidates without rancour. Though many contested, only one person could emerge. Those who stepped down for others are the unsung heroes of this process,” he stated. Earlier, the Ogun State APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, praised party members for their exemplary conduct during and after the primaries, noting that the strategic meeting was convened to strengthen consultations, mobilisation and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with a wave of insecurity stretching across its states, Governor Abiodun’s declaration places Ogun at the forefront of a coalition of sub-national governments taking proactive, technology-focused measures to protect their citizens. The coming weeks will determine whether these deployments can deliver the safety and peace that residents now urgently demand.
