A man who allegedly chained his sister in a dark room for four years after a bitter dispute over their jointly owned cement business is now on the run, as the Abuja community remains in shock at the depth of cruelty uncovered by a chance discovery on Friday.

The woman was rescued last night, June 13, 2026, after a resident fetching water near the compound in the Mpape area of Maitama Extension heard muffled sounds coming from a locked, seemingly abandoned section of the building. Neighbours forced the door open and found the victim chained to the floor in total darkness, emaciated and unable to walk, according to multiple news reports resurfaced on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

The ordeal began four years ago when the siblings jointly established a cement retail business. As the venture grew, a bitter feud erupted over the distribution of shares and profits. In a bid to cut his sister out of the business completely, the brother allegedly fabricated a story to neighbours and relatives, claiming she had become mentally unstable and required isolation. He then locked her away in a secluded, unlit room within the compound, securing her with heavy metal chains to prevent any escape or attempt to claim her financial rights.

The victim, whose identity has been withheld for privacy, was discovered in a severely debilitated physical state, completely unable to walk due to years of forced immobility. Neighbours immediately unchained her and rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she is currently receiving intensive medical attention.

The rescue operation has thrown up further disturbing allegations. Eyewitnesses within the neighbourhood claimed that the victim’s young daughter went missing around the same time the mother was locked away. Community members have raised concerns that the brother may have been responsible for the child’s disappearance, with some alleging that the minor could have been used for ritual purposes. At this stage, information regarding the child’s location or the circumstances of the disappearance has not been confirmed.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has been notified of the rescue and the surrounding allegations. A comprehensive investigation is underway to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable and to establish the facts behind the confinement and the missing person report. The brother is currently at large, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage within the community and renewed concerns over domestic abuse and the exploitation of vulnerable individuals under the guise of mental illness. Human rights advocates have condemned the alleged abuse, calling for a thorough investigation and justice for the victim. Many Nigerians have called for stronger protections for vulnerable individuals and stricter penalties for those found guilty of such offenses.

As the woman begins her long recovery, the question on everyone’s lips remains: how could a brother chain his own sibling for four years, and what else has he done that the world has yet to discover?

Above are photographs from the scene showing the dark room where the woman was held and the chains used to restrain her.
