A 21-year-old electrical apprentice, Soliu Olarewaju Mujeeb, is in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, after he allegedly lured his 60-year-old employer, Mr. Olarewaju Olusegun Afolabi, to an uncompleted building, murdered him, and buried his body in a shallow grave before using the victim’s mobile phone to demand a ₦2 million ransom from his family. The Kwara State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Abbas Nda Mohammed, disclosed this during a press briefing at the Command’s Headquarters in Ilorin on Sunday, June 14, 2026.

The tragic sequence of events began on Sunday, June 7, 2026, when Mr. Afolabi, an electrical technician, left his residence to inspect an electrical installation project but never returned home. After several days of unsuccessful attempts to locate him, the distressed family officially reported the case to the NSCDC’s Tracking Unit on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The situation took a sinister turn shortly after, when family members began receiving ransom demands of ₦2 million, which were being made directly from the victim’s own mobile phone. The family, unable to raise the full amount, managed to pay ₦120,000 as instructed by the caller, who promised to release the victim after receiving the money.

Utilising advanced digital tracking and forensic analysis of financial transactions linked to the victim’s Opay account, NSCDC operatives successfully traced and arrested Mujeeb. During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, revealing that he had previously worked with the deceased as an assistant on electrical installation jobs. Mujeeb stated that a lingering disagreement over missing installation materials had created deep resentment. He claimed the victim had forced him to pay for the missing materials in instalments, and he became angry when deductions started from his salary.

The suspect admitted to luring his former employer to an uncompleted building in the Kangile, Kunlende area of Ilorin under the pretence of inspecting a new electrical project, where he attacked and killed him. He then took the victim’s mobile phone and SIM card, which he later used to orchestrate the extortion plot. Following his confession, the suspect led operatives to the crime scene, where a shallow grave containing the victim’s remains was discovered. The victim’s mobile phone and SIM card were also recovered from the suspect’s possession.

Commandant Mohammed stated that investigations are ongoing, and upon completion of preliminary inquiries, the suspect will be transferred to the appropriate security agency for further investigation and prosecution. He reaffirmed the NSCDC’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property in Kwara State and pledged continued collaboration with sister security agencies to rid the state of criminal elements. He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to aid crime prevention efforts.

The victim’s body has been recovered from the shallow grave and deposited at a mortuary, while the family continues to mourn the tragic loss of their patriarch.
