ZURMI, Nigeria – Suspected bandits attacked farmers working on their farmlands in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Tuesday afternoon, June 16, 2026, killing four persons and abducting an unspecified number of others. The armed attackers stormed the fields, opened fire indiscriminately, and caused widespread panic as farmers fled for safety. Several workers were taken to unknown locations.
The latest incident adds to the growing wave of insecurity affecting rural communities in Zurmi and across Zamfara State. Farming, which is the primary livelihood of most residents, has become increasingly dangerous as bandits frequently target agricultural areas for abduction and extortion. Families have been left devastated, and livelihoods disrupted.
As of the time of this report, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the attack. Local vigilantes and community members have begun search efforts, but no rescue has been reported. The Zamfara State Police Command has yet to confirm the number of those abducted.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Zurmi LGA. On June 7, bandits killed a resident and abducted several women in the same area. On June 4, three farmers were killed while working on their farms. Residents have repeatedly called for increased military deployment and better protection for rural communities.
How many more innocent farmers must be lost in their own fields before real protection finally comes?
