Suspected Lakurawa terrorist elements suffered a heavy blow on Sunday, June 14, 2026, as troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma, successfully overran their hideout in the Dogon Daji general area of Dandi Local Government Area, Kebbi State. The clearance operation, part of a sustained offensive to rid the North-West of criminal elements, resulted in the recovery of a large cache of heavy weapons, improvised explosive devices, and logistics equipment, military authorities confirmed.
The confrontation began at approximately 11:00 a.m., when troops of the 1 Brigade operating from Forward Operating Base Kyangakwai made contact with the terrorists while on a fighting patrol towards Dogon Daji. The military spokesperson for the 8 Division and Sector 2, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, disclosed that the troops brought superior firepower to bear on the Lakurawa group, decisively overwhelming them and forcing them to flee from their positions. The terrorists attempted to resist but were quickly outmatched, retreating under heavy fire.
“A follow-on aggressive pursuit along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes led to the recovery of a large cache of arms, explosives and logistics equipment abandoned by the fleeing elements,” Osoba stated. Items recovered included rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launch tubes, several RPG warheads, multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs), two motorcycles used for mobility, battery chargers, and other personal belongings. The troops dominated the area after the engagement, conducting sustained patrols to prevent the terrorists from regrouping and to maintain control of the general area.
No casualties were recorded among the troops during the operation. The military said the success underscores the unwavering commitment of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fansan Yamma, to dismantling terrorist and bandit networks across the region. “The Nigerian Army remains resolute in sustaining offensive pressure on these criminal elements, denying them freedom of action and disrupting their nefarious activities to ensure the safety and security of law-abiding citizens,” Osoba added.
The operation was conducted by troops of the 8 Division under Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma. An operational report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday confirmed that the troops made contact with the terrorists around Dogon Daji in Dandi Local Government Area during the offensive. The report said the terrorists engaged the troops in a firefight but were overwhelmed and forced to flee. The troops subsequently pursued the fleeing terrorists and conducted exploitation operations in the area.
The Lakurawa terrorist group has been active in parts of Kebbi and Sokoto states, exploiting the rugged terrain and porous borders to launch attacks and evade security forces. The successful clearance operation in Dogon Daji is a significant blow to the group’s operational capabilities in the region. The military has intensified its operations across the North-West, targeting terrorist enclaves and bandit strongholds in an effort to restore peace and security to the troubled region.
The recovery of high-calibre weapons, including RPG launchers and IEDs, highlights the sophisticated nature of the terrorist group’s arsenal. The military’s ability to recover these weapons and disrupt their supply lines is a critical step in degrading their capacity to carry out attacks. The troops’ swift and decisive action has been widely commended, with many expressing hope that such operations will continue to yield positive results.
The military has called on members of the public to continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies, emphasizing that community support is vital to the success of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts. The troops remain on the offensive and are maintaining pressure on terrorist groups across the theatre of operations. Further operations are ongoing to track down the fleeing terrorists and consolidate the gains recorded in the area.
The success of Operation Fansan Yamma in Dogon Daji is a testament to the effectiveness of the military’s renewed strategy of sustained offensive action and intelligence-led operations. As the troops continue to clear terrorist strongholds and recover weapons, the hope is that lasting peace and security will soon be restored to the North-West region. The military has assured the public that it will not relent until all terrorist and bandit elements are neutralized and normalcy is fully restored.
