Gunmen have killed the District Head of Gwande in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Saf Samuel Alaket, in a brazen ambush attack along the Sha District axis bordering Daffo community, plunging the traditional council and residents into deep mourning. The incident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, while the traditional ruler was returning home after attending activities at the popular Tuesday market in Daffo.

According to sources in the area, the late district head had earlier participated in a traditional council meeting in Bokkos before embarking on his journey back to Gwande. Residents said the attackers laid an ambush close to the boundary between Sha District and Daffo community, targeting the vehicle conveying the monarch. The district head reportedly sustained severe injuries during the attack and was rushed to a nearby clinic for emergency treatment. However, despite efforts by medical personnel to stabilise him, he later succumbed to his injuries.

A community member, Mr Aten Pukat, confirmed the incident, describing the killing as a devastating loss to the people of Gwande and the entire Bokkos area. Pukat said the attack had thrown the Bokkos Traditional Council and residents into mourning, adding that the district head was widely respected for his contributions to peace and community development. He noted that condolences had continued to pour in from traditional institutions, community leaders and sympathisers following the tragic development.

Efforts by newsmen to reach the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful. The killing has heightened concerns over security in the area, where residents have continued to face recurring attacks and violence. Details surrounding the attack remain unclear, while security agencies are yet to provide an official statement on the killing. Residents have called for urgent measures to improve security and bring those responsible to justice.
