Nigerian troops have destroyed a terrorist camp in Zamfara State and rescued three kidnapped victims during a military operation aimed at dismantling armed criminal groups operating in the North-West region.
The operation was carried out by troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, during a clearance mission across communities in Zurmi and Shinkafi Local Government Areas of Zamfara State. According to a military operational report, the mission took place on June 12 as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and other security threats affecting communities in the region.
The troops, while conducting fighting patrols around Birnin Saba, Yanbuki, and Sabon Garin Daudawa communities, encountered armed terrorists operating in Yanbuki District of Zurmi Local Government Area. The soldiers engaged the attackers in a gun battle, resulting in the neutralisation of one terrorist while others reportedly fled into surrounding areas.
Following the encounter, troops continued their advance towards Sabon Garin Daudawa, maintaining pressure on the fleeing criminals. The military reported that the terrorists abandoned their camp after sighting the advancing troops, allowing soldiers to clear the area and destroy the hideout to prevent it from being used again as a base for criminal activities.
During the operation, soldiers recovered several items believed to have been used by the criminal group, including rifles, four magazines loaded with ammunition, two motorcycles, seven mobile phones, two MP3 players, camouflage clothing, and other military-related materials.
The rescued victims were evacuated from captivity and taken to safety, according to the military report. Authorities did not immediately release further details about their identities or the circumstances surrounding their abduction.
The latest operation comes amid continued security challenges in Zamfara and neighbouring states, where armed groups have carried out attacks, kidnappings, and other criminal activities against residents. The North-West region has experienced prolonged insecurity, with security agencies conducting repeated operations against terrorist and bandit networks operating from remote forest locations.
The Nigerian military has repeatedly stated that its operations are focused on denying armed groups freedom of movement, destroying their operational bases, and restoring stability to affected communities.
Security officials have urged residents in vulnerable areas to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information that can assist ongoing operations. The military also reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on criminal groups across Zamfara and the wider North-West until peace and security are restored.
