Troops Repel Attack On Illegal Mining Site In Plateau, Rescue Injured Victim

Troops of Sector 6 Operation Enduring Peace have successfully repelled an attack on an illegal mining site in the Rim community, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, rescuing a local miner who sustained gunshot injuries during the assault. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2026, when suspected armed Fulani militias launched an attack on the mining location, prompting a swift military response, security sources told Zagazola Makama.

According to military sources, troops responded to a distress call reporting the attack and immediately mobilised to the scene. Upon arrival, the soldiers engaged the attackers in a fierce exchange of gunfire, successfully repelling the assault and forcing the gunmen to flee in disarray. Following the encounter, troops conducted a sweep of the area and rescued a local miner identified as Mr. Pam Maidoki, who had sustained gunshot injuries during the attack. The victim was immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Riyom, where he is currently receiving medical attention.

Military authorities said troops have since intensified clearance operations within the general area to track down and possibly apprehend or neutralise the fleeing assailants. Efforts are ongoing to restore calm and prevent further attacks in the affected community. The operation underscores the Nigerian Army's commitment to protecting lives and property and denying criminal elements freedom of action across Plateau State, where illegal mining sites have increasingly become targets for armed groups seeking to exploit mineral resources or extort miners.
