The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered several firearms and live ammunition during an intelligence-led operation in the state, marking another significant victory in the ongoing fight against violent crime in the South-South region.
In a statement released to reporters on Monday, June 29, 2026, the Command confirmed that the suspect, identified as Austine Emenike, popularly known as "Oyibo," was arrested by operatives following credible intelligence. Emenike is said to be a resident of Aluu community in Rivers State, a area that has experienced its share of security challenges in recent years.
Police said items recovered from the suspect included one locally made pistol, four single-barrel guns and five live cartridges. The seizure of these weapons is expected to significantly reduce the capacity of criminal elements to operate within the state.
According to the Command, preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may be linked to a wider criminal network. It added that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged gang while investigators work to determine the full extent of its activities. The arrest of Emenike is seen as a major breakthrough that could lead to the dismantling of a larger criminal syndicate operating in the area.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, commended the officers involved in the operation, describing the arrest as a significant step in the Command's efforts to curb violent crime across the state. He reiterated the police's commitment to intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of residents. The Commissioner also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies, noting that public cooperation remains vital in the fight against crime.
The Rivers State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that it will continue to intensify operations against criminal elements. The arrest of Austine Emenike and the recovery of firearms and ammunition demonstrate the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the importance of community cooperation in combating crime. As investigations continue, the police have urged members of the public to provide timely and credible information to support ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
