A wave of coordinated attacks by suspected bandits on Sunday night, June 28, 2026, plunged communities in Malumfashi and Dandume Local Government Areas into mourning and fear, leaving at least one person dead, several injured, and a number of women sexually assaulted after being abducted.
In the first attack, bandits stormed Badole village in Ruwan Sanyi Ward, Malumfashi LGA. According to local sources, the assailants opened fire on residents, killing one person and leaving two others with gunshot wounds. The attack came just hours after heavily armed bandits were repelled in neighbouring Ketare town, where at least seven local defenders, including two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), lost their lives while protecting the community.
In a separate incident around 1 a.m. on Monday, June 29, gunmen invaded Tudun Ali area in Dandume LGA, attacking residents with machetes before abducting several women. The victims were reportedly released at dawn after being subjected to sexual assault. The attacks have highlighted the vulnerability of rural communities in the North-West, where bandits continue to operate with impunity despite ongoing military operations.
The Katsina State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incidents, but security sources confirmed that the attacks occurred within hours of each other, suggesting a coordinated effort by criminal elements to overwhelm security forces. Residents of the affected communities have expressed grief and anger over the attacks, calling on the state and federal governments to take urgent action to protect lives and property. “We are tired of burying our loved ones. These bandits move freely and attack us at will. The government must do something now,” a resident of Badole village said.
The attacks in Katsina come amid a surge in bandit activities across the North-West. On Sunday, bandits killed an imam and three others in Illela Dawagware village, Sokoto State, and abducted 12 people. In Katsina State, separate attacks on farming communities in Malumfashi LGA have left at least 20 people dead since the start of the farming season. As communities in Katsina grapple with the aftermath of the attacks, the need for urgent and sustained action to address the security crisis in the North-West has never been more critical.
