Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved scholarships for more than 760 beneficiaries under the state's 2025/2026 Local Scholarship Scheme, a move that further underscores his administration's commitment to expanding access to quality education and developing the state's human capital.

The Executive Secretary of the Enugu State Scholarship and Education Loans Board, Chukwuemeka Mbah, announced the approval on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu. According to him, the beneficiaries, drawn from the 17 Local Government Areas of the state and across various academic disciplines, comprise over 500 undergraduate students, 100 postgraduate students, and 160 public sector teachers. Successful candidates who passed the Computer-Based Test (CBT) are already being contacted via text messages and email on an LGA-by-LGA basis for verification and documentation.

The scholarship scheme reflects Governor Mbah's unwavering commitment to investing in education, empowering young people, and equipping the workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to drive the state's transformation agenda. The Executive Secretary urged successful applicants to promptly respond to the messages sent to them to facilitate the verification process.

According to the Executive Secretary, the scholarship award is one of the key education initiatives of the Mbah administration aimed at ensuring that financial constraints do not stand in the way of academic excellence and human capital development in Enugu State. "More beneficiaries will be captured in the next phase of the scholarship programme. It's open to the people of Enugu State, and I want to urge our people to continue to apply. This is not the time to say you're unable to get quality education because of funding. The governor has made it easy for our people to access free, quality education," he added.

The inclusion of public school teachers is particularly significant, as it is intended to strengthen the capacity of educators and support the effective implementation of the state's experiential learning model in schools. The Executive Secretary noted that the verification exercise for undergraduate and postgraduate beneficiaries will commence immediately, while that of the teachers will begin subsequently.

The scholarship scheme forms part of a broader education reform agenda being pursued by Governor Mbah's administration, which has prioritised investment in education as a cornerstone of the state's development strategy. The Mbah administration has also introduced various initiatives, including the construction and renovation of schools, the provision of learning materials, and the training of teachers, to improve the quality of education across the state. The scholarship scheme is expected to provide significant relief to families struggling with the cost of education and to encourage more students to pursue higher education.

The scheme has been widely praised by education stakeholders, who have described it as a timely intervention that will help to reduce the financial burden on students and families. The Enugu State Government has announced that more beneficiaries will be included in the next phase, giving more residents another opportunity to apply. As the verification process gets underway, successful applicants are encouraged to respond promptly to the notifications sent to them to facilitate the verification process.
