A violent windstorm has claimed the lives of two children and left two others injured after a tree under which they had taken shelter was uprooted and collapsed on them in Bashe Village, on the outskirts of Burra in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, June 29, 2026, at approximately 4:00 p.m. when a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds swept through the village, forcing five children to seek refuge under a large tree.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, by the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Nafiu Habib. According to the statement, the Burra Divisional Police Headquarters received a report from the Officer-in-Charge of the Bashe Police Outstation at about 5:40 p.m. on the day of the incident, detailing that the storm had uprooted the tree and caused it to fall on the children who were sheltering beneath it.

The victims were identified as Amina Maharazu, eight years old; Asiya Tasiu, eight years old; Samaila Tasiu, ten years old; Sulaiman M. Rabiu, twelve years old; and Yusuf M. Salmanu, eight years old. All five were residents of Bashe Village. Police officers were immediately mobilised to the scene and rushed the victims to the Primary Health Care Centre in Bashe for urgent medical attention. Tragically, Amina Maharazu and Asiya Tasiu were pronounced dead by a medical practitioner upon arrival. Samaila Tasiu escaped unhurt, while Sulaiman M. Rabiu and Yusuf M. Salmanu sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment, with authorities confirming that they are responding positively to medical care.

The police have documented the scene, and the bodies of the deceased have been released to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. Reacting to the tragedy, the Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, commiserated with the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured children. He also urged parents and guardians to educate their children on the dangers of taking shelter under trees during storms and heavy rainfall to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

The incident has drawn attention to the dangers posed by severe weather conditions during the rainy season, particularly in rural communities where residents often lack access to sturdy shelters. Local authorities have called on residents to remain cautious and to promptly report emergencies to the nearest security agency.
