Nigerian troops have successfully reopened the Bagega–Anka major supply route in Zamfara State after carrying out a comprehensive explosive clearance operation that removed potential bomb threats from the strategic highway, security sources have confirmed. The operation, conducted on Thursday morning, also led to the recovery of a Nigeria Police Counter-Terrorism/Counter-Strike (NP CSK) vehicle that had recently struck an improvised explosive device along the same route.
The clearance operation was carried out at about 9:30 a.m. on July 2, 2026, by troops of the 1 Brigade in conjunction with a Quick Response Force (QRF) and an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, according to intelligence sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama. The troops conducted a thorough route scanning exercise along the Bagega–Anka Main Supply Route (MSR) in Anka Local Government Area to detect and neutralise any improvised explosive devices or other explosive hazards that could endanger road users.
At the conclusion of the operation, the route was confirmed free of explosive threats and subsequently reopened to vehicular traffic. The operation was completed without incident, and no casualties were recorded among the participating troops or supporting personnel.
During the clearance mission, troops also retrieved the Nigeria Police Counter-Terrorism/Counter-Strike vehicle that had struck an IED along the same route. Security sources said the latest mission forms part of ongoing military efforts to secure key transportation corridors in Zamfara State and prevent armed groups from planting explosive devices on major highways.
The Bagega–Anka corridor has become a focal point of security concerns in recent weeks, with armed groups increasingly adopting IED tactics similar to those used by insurgent groups in the North-East. Security forces have intensified route clearance patrols and surveillance operations to deny criminal elements the opportunity to emplace explosive devices on major highways within the theatre of operations.
The route clearance forms part of sustained counter-insurgency and counter-banditry efforts aimed at ensuring the safety of motorists, security personnel, and residents travelling along strategic roads in Zamfara State. Security forces have assured that they will continue conducting regular route clearance operations and surveillance patrols to ensure the safety of residents, security personnel, and commercial traffic using strategic roads across the state.
