In the early hours of Friday, bandits launched a deadly assault on Tozon-kasa village in Kurya Madaro Ward, Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing one resident and leaving five others wounded in a night of terror that has once again exposed the fragility of security in Nigeria's North-West region.

The attackers, who had earlier rustled cattle from Kasuwar Daji, descended on the village with heavy firepower, catching residents off guard. Among the victims was Abdulrashid Hakimi, who was shot and killed during the raid. Five others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility, according to sources familiar with the incident.

The attack, which occurred on the night of Friday, July 3, 2026, adds to the growing list of violent incidents that have turned Zamfara State into one of the most dangerous places in Nigeria. Communities in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area have endured repeated assaults by armed groups, with bandits often operating with impunity, killing, abducting, and rustling livestock while security forces struggle to contain the crisis.

Residents of Tozon-kasa village are now left to mourn the loss of Hakimi, a man described by neighbours as a hardworking member of the community. The five injured victims are fighting for their lives, their families grappling with the dual burden of grief and the cost of medical care. The attack came just days after another tragic incident in the state, where a woman was reportedly sent away from a hospital because her family could not afford treatment after her husband was killed by bandits in Gusau.

The North-West region, particularly Zamfara, has been under the grip of bandits and terrorists for years, with communities bearing the brunt of relentless violence. Despite government promises and military operations, the attacks have continued unabated, leaving families shattered and entire villages displaced.

As the people of Tozon-kasa bury their dead and tend to their wounded, the question on everyone's lips remains: how many more lives must be lost before lasting security reaches these rural communities? The answer, for now, remains painfully elusive.
