Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, the medical expert who issued an independent health report on the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested by security operatives at his residence in Enugu State.
The arrest, which occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Professor Aghaji's home in Independence Layout, Enugu, was made public by human rights lawyer, Chief Barrister Maxwell Opara, in a statement on Saturday. According to Opara, the professor's independent medical assessment reportedly contradicted the official medical report presented by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding Kanu's health condition. Professor Aghaji, a retired professor of medicine from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a former consultant cardio-thoracic surgeon at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, had served as one of Kanu's private medical consultants. His independent assessment had recommended the immediate transfer of the IPOB leader to the National Hospital or a foreign facility due to his deteriorating health, a position that clashed directly with the DSS's medical team, which had told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Kanu could be properly treated within DSS custody without being moved.
Opara, who did not disclose the agency responsible for the arrest or whether any charge had been filed against the professor, has called on the Nigerian Medical Association, the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society organisations, and other relevant authorities to intervene and ensure that due process and the rule of law are strictly observed. He warned against the intimidation of individuals for expressing what they believe to be the truth. "We call on the Nigerian Medical Association, Nigeria Bar Association, Civil Society Group and other relevant authorities to ensure that due process and the rule of law is strictly observed and nobody should be intimidated for speaking the truth," Opara stated.
The reported arrest comes amid continued legal proceedings involving Kanu, whose detention and health condition have remained subjects of public concern and litigation. As of the time of filing this report, neither the DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, nor any other security agency had officially confirmed the arrest.
